High-rise apartment dwellers will have to equip themselves with escape masks for safety, fire and disaster management minister Jawed Khan said today at Writers’ Buildings.
He said such masks will be made mandatory and all committees of high-rise apartments owners would be advised to inform residents in their complexes accordingly.
Directors general of the fire department will soon inform apartment owners’ committees regarding the location where masks are to be available and the price, he said. The masks will have seven layers and will aid breathing in the event of smoke billowing out of a fire in the complex.
“We are advising people to use this mask as it will help buy at least 15-20 minutes to escape from the fire,” Mr Khan said. The fire department will inform people regarding the mask during handing over fire licenses to them.
Mr Khan said a state-of-the-art control room would be set up soon for quick deployment of fire tenders.
“The control room will help track the location from where an emergency call is received and send fire tenders to the spot quickly,” Mr Khan said. The control room will be set up at the fire service headquarter and chief minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate it very soon, he added.
