KOLKATA, 18 JUNE: A 32-year-old man was arrested on charges of molesting a college student in a DumDum-bound Metro train at around 10 a.m. today.
Police said that the accused, Basu Sikari, a resident of East Jadavpur had boarded the train from Kavi Nazrul (Garia) Metro station. The victim also boarded the train there.
He was allegedly harassing the girl right from the beginning in the packed train. Despite warning the accused repeatedly, he continued harassing her till the train reached the Maidan station. Co-passengers of the victim also asked the man not to harass her. The girl then dragged the accused out from the train when it reached Maidan Metro station and took him to the station superintendent. The superintendent asked the girl to file a written complaint, following which police were informed. Cops from Maidan police station went to the spot and arrested Basu.
Metro spokesperson, Mr Protyush Ghosh, said that the girl has shown courage by lodging a complaint and this helped the accused being arrested by the police. “Such incidents often take place with the increase in passengers in Metro, but not many show the courage to lodge a complaint,” he said.
Mr Manoj Chakraborty, a commuter, said lakhs of commuters use the Metro everyday. But, in the absence of adequate number of trains people are required to travel in crammed coaches. “To avoid repetition of such incidents the number of trains should be increased immediately,” he said.
