With a view to putting into display the evolution and changes of the writing pen with changing times, the librarian of the Old Malda Banibhavan Library, Subir Kumar Saha, has been organising a unique exhibition of over 200 pens on the library premises. The display showing the ‘pen evolution’ has managed to pull crowds, as people flock in droves to the institution to witness the rare collection.

“We cannot think of writing without a pen. This instrument and its evolution have always remained behind the curtains. Very few in the world would be found interested in the matter. However, history has been documented with the help of this,” Mr Saha said.

According to him, he was fond of pens and their varieties since his childhood. “My liking turned into a hobby and then into a passion, while later on, I realized that it was quite significant to collect them,” he said.

A large variety of pens — feather, quill, fountain, ball, gel etc — are on display at the exhibition showing. In addition to this, coins from Rs 1 to Rs 1000 can also be seen there.

It may be noted here that the library was awarded with the Nirmal Chandra Smriti Award in 2017 as the best library consisting over 14,000 books and 1200 readers.

“Increasing awareness among the people about the different kinds of pens is my sole desire here,” Mr Saha added.
