The 47th Senior National Softball Championship concluded at Duttapulia in Nadia district, today, after five days of competition involving teams from 28 states, marking one of the largest national sporting events hosted in the region in recent years. Close to 1,200 men and women players took part in the tournament.

In a tightly contested tournament, Maharashtra clinched the women’s title with a victory over Punjab, while Chhattisgarh emerged champions in the men’s category after defeating Delhi.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by minister Ujjwal Biswas, Additional Superintendent of Police Laltu Halder, public works department official Debashish Ganguly, Dhanatala police station officer-in-charge Kaushik Kar, along with senior administrators, elected representatives and officials of the state and national softball associations.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Biswas described the championship as a significant step towards strengthening organised sport at the district level.

Former legislator and state president of the Softball Association, Samir Kumar Poddar, said the participation of 600 men and 600 women players from 28 states reflected the sport’s widening footprint across rural and semi-urban India.
