Malda, 8 July
A youth was beaten up and even electrocuted by the aggrieved mob after he was caught allegedly while stealing motorbikes last night at Schoolpara village of Sahapur area in the Malda police station area along with three other companions. Police later reached the spot to recover Shridam Mitra (30) in a serious condition and rushed him to Malda Medical College Hospital (MMCH).
Police sources informed that Shridam and three of his companions went to the house of Bibhas Sarkar and were allegedly trying to steal away a motorcycle. However, Mr Sarkar woke up and his shouts gathered the neighbours who caught Shridam red-handed while the other three managed to scamper away.
The aggrieved villagers tied Shridam to an electric pole and started lynching him around 5 a.m.
Some of them even allegedly electrocuted Shridam. Police rushed to the spot around 9 a.m. and recovered the youth in a virtually fainted state. He was admitted to MMCH.
The villagers alleged that crimes like theft and snatching have abnormally risen in the locality. Atleast three motorbikes were stolen in one week. Police failed to nab any goon. They claimed that Shridam was a notorious criminal and was released on bail only few days back.
The Additional SP of Malda, Mr Shyam Singh, said: “Police were not late in rescuing the youth from lynching and admitted him to hospital after arresting him.” Mr Singh conceded that the youth had past crime records.
