Lightning claimed the life of a 21-year-old aspiring cricketer from Serampore of Hooghly district on Sunday.

Debabrata Pal was struck by lightning at the Vivekananda Park in South Kolkata. The all-rounder who joined the Calcutta Cricket Academy located in Vivekananda Park last month collapsed soon after and died, according to secretary of the club, Abdul Masood.

“We were about to start our practice session when lightning began in the afternoon. He (Pal) suddenly collapsed and we rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead,” said Masood.

It was the second incident of its kind on the day when lightning claimed life of people at a sporting ground.

Three spectators lost their lives and two others sustained injuries when lightning struck during a hockey match at Sagbahal under Talsara police station, nearly 80 km from Rourkela, on Sunday.

The hockey match was half way through when it started to rain. While the game was not stopped initially, the match was called off after thunder and lightning started.
