Five major Left parties issued a joint statement on Sunday strongly condemning what they described as US military aggression against Venezuela and the alleged “kidnapping” of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. They called the actions a blatant violation of international law and an attack on Venezuela’s sovereignty.

The statement accused the United States of a “direct assault on a sovereign country” and violating the United Nations Charter. They cited recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, including his declaration to “capture the oil reserves of Venezuela,” as evidence of imperialist motives. The parties also criticised US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s warnings that Cuba and Mexico might be the next targets.

The Left parties alleged that these statements reflect a broader US strategy to impose global hegemony, likening it to a “Trump corollary” to the Monroe Doctrine, treating the Western Hemisphere as its “backyard.” They noted reports of widespread mobilisation within Venezuela against the US actions and extended their full solidarity with the Venezuelan people defending their national sovereignty.

Calling for nationwide protests in India, the parties urged all peace-loving and anti-imperialist citizens to join in opposing US aggression and standing in solidarity with Latin America. They also called on the Government of India to condemn the US actions and support Venezuela.

The joint statement was signed by CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby, CPI General Secretary D Raja, CPI(ML) Liberation General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, All India Forward Bloc General Secretary G Devarajan, and Revolutionary Socialist Party General Secretary Manoj Bhattacharya.
