The Darjeeling district Left Front will hit the streets to protest against the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. Questioning the logic and the way the exercise was conducted, party leaders said that it had created a negative impact on north Bengal.

Meanwhile, Siliguri mayor Asok Bhattacharya said that if necessary, they would stage a sit-in in Kolkata against the alleged discrimination of the state government when it came to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation.

“We strongly condemn the way more than 19 lakh people were left out of the NRC’s final list in the name of identifying genuine citizens. It is inhumane and autocratic and it has created a negative impact in north Bengal. The final NRC has spread panic, especially among the population in neighbouring Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts. We have decided to intensify a campaign and highlight the issue in our coming public meeting in Siliguri on 14 September,” district Left Front convener Jibesh Sarkar said here today.

Senior party leader Md Salim will address the rally with other senior Left Front leaders. The CPI-M and the Congress have supported a resolution in the Assembly on Friday that opposed the NRC in Assam.
