KOLKATA, 5 OCT: Come Sunday and the state will have its first organic fruits and vegetables market at Salt Lake near City Centre opposite Seva hospital.
According to experts, organic fruits and vegetables help prevent cancer, diabetes and other heart-related diseases. Vegetables and fruits cultivated using organic fertilisers contain more nutrients and antioxidants, said experts.
The market will be set up by a private company. It will initially cover 300 sq ft area. The market will be inaugurated tomorrow and will open every Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon.
The initiative has been taken as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.
The move comes at a time when there has been a steep hike in prices of fruits and vegetables. Commodities will be sold at the new market at cheaper rates as compared to retail markets. Mr Pradip Saraswati who has been working on organic fertiliser for the past 15 years has helped the company set up the market. Mr Saraswati has trained farmers to grow vegetables using vermicompost, bloodmeal, bone meal, humic acid, amino acid and seaweed extracts instead of using pesticides.
Around 15 farmers will assemble at the market tomorrow and sell vegetables directly to consumers. The farmers will come from Birbhum, Bankura, Nadia, South and North 24-Parganas.
The company will bear the travelling expenses of the farmers who come from the districts to sell their produce. The market space will be expanded later. If the state government allots space the company is ready to set up organic fruits and vegetables markets in other areas of the city as well, said an official of the company.
