The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to stop collecting waste from citizens if they do not segregate it at source in separate dustbins provided by the civic body, informed the member mayor-in-council for solid waste management, KMC, Debabrata Majumdar, today.

The civic body has been distributing separate bins to citizens in various wards urging the people to dump biodegradable and nonbiodegradable domestic wastes, at source, separately.

The process was started in December in which KMC has targeted to distribute 38 lakh buckets and bins of two different colours – green and blue.

According to the MMiC, 27 wards under the KMC have distributed 100 per cent dust bins in the twin colours. Of all the 16 boroughs of the civic body, the highest percentage of bin distribution has taken place in Borough-XI with 60.7 per cent while the lowest has been in BoroughVIII with 21.7 per cent. On an average, the civic body has distributed 40.5 per cent dustbins in the city.

According to the MMiC, the councillors would have to check how much nonbiodegradable is being collected.

“We are getting information that at many places, the waste is being mixed up. I request the councillors and KMC officials to tell the people that waste from their houses would not be collected if they mix it up,” said the MMiC for SWM, Debabrata Majumdar.

The civic body is said to have fined 1,286 persons this year under Section 338 of the KMC (amendment) Act for littering in public places.
