Relatives of the victims of the triple murder case in Jiagunj today met chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna and said there was no politics involved in the incident. Miss Banerjee on the other hand has assured the relatives of providing them all legal help in this connection. Bandhu Prakash Pal (40), his pregnant wife Beauty Pal (30) and their son Angan (5) were found murdered at their home at Lebu Bagan area of Jiaganj on the afternoon of 8 October.

On Tuesday, Murshidabad district police arrested Utpal Behera, a mason, for the killings. Police claimed that Behera, a native of the same village where the Pals lived, has confessed to the crime. Soon after the incident, the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) claimed that Pal participated in the weekly programmes organised by the Sangh while the Trinamul Congress criticised the saffron party for politicising the tragedy. Pal’s relatives had, however, denied his involvement with the RSS.

“Miss Banerjee expressed her grief at the incident and has extended every possible assistance to us. She has also said that she would provide legal help if needed,” said Mr Rajesh Ghosh, Bandhu Prakash’s cousin. A seven-member team comprising relatives of the deceased family that reached Nabanna this afternoon said Miss Banerjee has asked them to meet her. They said that they were happy with the role of police and the manner in which investigations were done. “We have not asked for any compensation or financial assistance from the chief minister,” Mr Ghosh added. Earlier in the day, Pal’s relatives went to the state police headquarters at Bhawani Bhawan and met senior police officers in connection with the case.
