Shubhashish Thakur (62) died of a cardiac arrest while performing at a live jatra show (open-air theatre), Satya Treta Dwapar Kali, at Bamunara Tapoban City in Durgapur. The popular local actor collapsed on stage during the performance, leaving the audience in shock.

Fellow jatra artistes immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought-dead.

Thakur, who lived in a multi-storeyed building in Tapoban City, also ran a grocery shop in the locality. Originally from Purulia district, his body will be taken there for cremation.

Locals recalled that he was deeply passionate about acting and regularly took part in local jatra performances during the winter season.

Chairperson of the Board of Administrators of Durgapur Municipal Corporation Anindita Mukherjee expressed her condolences to the bereaved family. “The tragic death of local jatra actor Shubhashish Thakur is deeply shocking. Durgapur has lost a talented and much-loved performer,” she said.
