The chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who is trying for an image makeover ahead of assembly election in two years’ time, was seen in a new act – chaiwallahwhile she was at a surprise visit to a coastal village, adjacent to Odisha border in Digha after completing her administrative review meeting this afternoon.

Many people, especially the villagers were surprised watching her at a road side tea shop where she was stirring the tea in a jar-sized mug and adding sugar.

“I prefer to cook, but I hardly get time. From my childhood, I do every work in my house and I like to do these.”

For the last two days, Miss Banerjee visited the slums in Howrah and the fishermen hamlets in Digha ~ which she used to do normally during the times when she became a strong Opposition leader ~ during the Left Front government. Some political leaders, however, described her sudden change as an effort to build her image before the people and they said, “It is not a new act but it is scripted by her new poll strategist Prasanta Kishore.”

She spoke to those living there and sat with villagers in a courtyard and discussed problems. She asked her cabinet colleague to get chocolates for children. Apart from this, she asked for a glass of water and had a chat with them over cups of tea.

After ending her administrative meeting, she went to a coastal village of Duttapurpalli, near to Odisha border and talked with the villagers. Banerjee discussed several problems which they were facing and finally distributed saris to the women. She also distributed sweets and other things to the villagers.
