An Indian Coast Guard(ICG) fast patrol vessel(FPV) built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) was launched today at Rajabagan Dockyard Unit of GRSE while the secretary of defence production, ministry of defence,

Dr. Ajay Kumar, said India is stressing on export of defence equipment to friendly nations. The vessel named Kanaklata Baruawas launched today at GRSE Kolkata.

The vessel is the fifth and last of the series of the class being built by the company. The first ship of this class, ICGS Priyadarshini, was commissioned on 27 March 2019.

The entire design of the ship has been developed in-house as per requirements of the Coast Guard. The ship is 50 metres long and 7.5 metres wide with a displacement of around 308 tonnes.

It is designed for a maximum speed of 34 knots, with an endurance of more than 1500 nautical miles at cruising speed of 12-16 knots. The vessel is equipped with three main engines and with advanced communication and navigational systems.

The FPVs are ideal platforms for undertaking multifarious close coast missions such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and medical evacuation etc.

The launching phase also marks the completion of the main hull of the ship for transfer from land to the water for the first time.

Meanwhile, the secretary (defence production), Dr. Ajay Kumar, speaking on the occasion, said: “India is focusing on export of defence equipment to friendly nations. The country is already exporting defence equipment to USA and countries in the Middle-East, South Asia and Africa. India had produced defence-related equipment worth Rs 80,000 crore in 2018- 19, out of which Rs 11,000-crore worth of armaments were exported.

“ Dr Kumar added: “‘Make in India’ has already kick started the indigenous approach and now India is indigenously manufacturing warships, fighter jets, helicopter etc. and efforts are always on to use the latest technology for the purpose.”

The GRSE currently has a strong order book of over Rs 27,500 crore, equipping the shipyard with a deep pool of revenue-generating projects. The ceremonial naming of the vessel was done by Ms Veena Ajay Kumar, wife of Dr Ajay Kumar, chief guest of the event, in the presence of Inspector General Rajan Bargotra, Commander, Coast Guard NE Region, Rear Admiral VK Saxena, (Retd), chairman and managing director, GRSE, and other senior dignitaries of the Central and state government.
