Kurseong, 5 December
The GTA member, Mrs Prabha Chettri was finally granted bail by the Additional District and Session Judge, Kurseong today and she will be released from jail tomorrow.
She was elected to the GTA from Mahanadi-Tindharia constituency in the Kurseong sub-division and was arrested on 18 August from Kurseong town on several charges.
Talking to reporters, the defense lawyers, Mr Rajen Thapa and Mr H W Lama said that Mrs Chettri had been arrested on different cases and charges like blocking the national highway, disturbing police actions, attacking with sharp weapons, arsons etc.
Meanwhile, she had obtained bails on all these cases except one case of arson (GR 197/2013, 436 IPC).
The hearing of the last case was held today at the Additional District and Session Court, Kurseong. The Judge, Tarak Nath Bhagat granted her bail with a bail amount of Rs 3000 with registered surety.
She will be released after some paper works tomorrow morning, it is learnt. It is also learnt that she was not physically present during the hearing at Kurseong court today, as she is still kept in Siliguri jail.
As per the defense lawyers, a shop-cum-house of one TMC activist, Mr Surat Rai was reportedly torched at Lath Punchor area in the Kurseong sub-division on 19 June and Mrs Chettri was ‘shown arrest’ on 7 November after she was tagged with that arson case.
Mr Lama further informed that the bail had been given under the ground of her being a woman with a family to look after and also since no FIR has been listed against her in this particular arson case. Besides, her husband is physically handicapped with no one to take care of.
Notably, several GTA and GJMM members, tagged with multiple cases, have been languishing in jails for months. After Mrs Chettri is released tomorrow the number of the GTA Sabha members lodged in jails would come down to nine. The GTA Sabha members who are still in jail are Binay Tamang, Mahendra Pradhan, Arun Singchi, Kalyan Dewan, Nima Tamang, Yogendra Rai, Anosh Thapa, Pranay Thapa and Anit Thapa.
