The state transport department is gearing up to tighten its grip on the fake vehicles pollution testing centres in the state. The department is mulling to launch a software for pollution testing and suspend the testing centres found involved in issuing fake certificates.

The department is said to have received complaints on pollution testing. Complaints on vehicles entering Kolkata and failing to clear the pollution test despite having a certificate was received by the department. Following this, a meeting with the centres responsible for installing the pollution testing devices and the department was held recently.

Notably, in the present scenario, a fine of Rs 10,000 is to be paid if a vehicle fails the pollution test.

Considering the situation, the vehicles facing such problems are being asked to get the pollution testing done from another centre within seven days instead of being fined immediately. “This is being done to understand where exactly is the fault with the testing centres,” said state transport minister Snehasis Chakraborty. “This would be clear after the second round of pollution testing of vehicles. After that, the point from where the fault would be committed would be suspended,” added the minister.

According to the minister, the department is also considering launching software on pollution testing.

New software would be introduced by the department which would be synchronized with the pollution testing machine. After the introduction of this software, no centres would be able to issue false certificates without conducting a test.

The department is also considering plans to bring an automated fitness test system for vehicles. Presently, vehicles have to undergo a manual testing for obtaining a fitness certificate.

The system, according to Mr Chakraborty, is to be introduced to increase accuracy and reduce chances of accident
