Police arrested Mr Rakesh Singh, general secretary of the Kolkata Zoological Park Employees’ Federation, on charges of abusing a staff of the Zoo.
Police said Mr Singh was arrested under The Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 for abusing Mr Ajay Lal Hela.
Police said Mr Hela lodged a complaint against him alleging that on 4 January Mr Singh harassed him and abused him mentioning his cast.
On the basis of the complaint police arrested Mr Singh from the crossing of AJC Bose Road and Belvedere Road this afternoon.
Following his arrest some members of the federation put up a roadblock in Bhawanipore.
Police arrested them after they denied to withdraw the roadblock.
A senior officer said that they have arrested eight persons and are investigating the matter. Police have also slapped charges of unlawful confinement and causing hurt against the accused.
