The CPI-M, the Congress and the BJP on Tuesday slammed chief minister Mamata Banerjee for providing Rs.2 lakh each to 4,000 new clubs and Rs.1 lakh each to 6,000 old clubs for sports and games.
The CPI-M accused the chief minister of "misusing" public money to get cadres from local clubs for working for the party during the coming Assembly poll. "When farmers are committing suicide for not getting remunerative prices for agricultural produce, the Trinamul government is doling out crores of rupees to strengthen the ruling party’s election machinery," CPI-M MP Md Selim said.
Congress leader Abdul Mannan said the chief minister’s announcement indicated she was losing faith in the people as money earmarked for public welfare schemes was being diverted. "This is a blatant misuse of rate payers’ money for pampering ruling party cadres in about 45 per cent of booths where they will be deployed for rigging polls," Mannan said.
Samik Bhattacharya, BJP MLA, said the chief minister’s announcement showed only the failure of the government to generate employment for the youth because of which it was only trying to enlist their support by offering doles with public money.
