All 10 fingers of an Adivasi man’s hands were chopped off allegedly by a group of people in West Bengal’s Birbhum district due to some superstition, police said on Wednesday.

Six people have been detained in connection with the gory incident at Radhakrishnapur village under Parui police station on Tuesday evening, according to a police officer.

The around 60-year-old victim, Phandi Sardar, is undergoing treatment in a hospital.

“He is now stable. Our personnel visited him at the hospital and recorded his statement. His son has lodged a police complaint today (Wednesday). A detailed investigation is on,” said an officer of the Parui police station.

“six people have been detained for interrogation,” he said.

The officer said Sardar used to perform some pujas or rituals, due to which the villagers thought he was involved in dark practices.

“This apparently pushed them to this inhuman act. We are looking into all possible angles,” he said
