Police on Saturday arrested Regina Bibi, wife of arrested Trinamool Congress leader Jahangir Khan, in connection with the attempted storming of Falta Police Station in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on June 17, 2026.
Investigators have identified Regina Bibi as a key accused in the case linked to an alleged attempt by a group of local Trinamool Congress supporters to force their way into the police station and secure Khan’s release. Her arrest comes after she remained out of reach of law enforcement agencies for nearly three days following the incident.
According to police sources, Regina Bibi was taken into custody from a hideout near the Indo-Nepal border on Saturday morning. The operation was carried out days after state police personnel and members of the Central Armed Police Forces thwarted the attempt to enter the police station.
She has been booked under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Arms Act and the Explosives Act. Police are expected to produce her before a court in South 24 Parganas later in the day.
With her arrest, the number of people held in connection with the case has gone up to 26.
Police probe points to alleged planning meeting
Preliminary findings of the investigation suggest that preparations for the attack were discussed at a meeting held at a secret location a day before the incident.
Police officials said the meeting was allegedly convened by Regina Bibi. Investigators claim it was decided there that supporters would assemble at a designated point around three kilometres from Falta Police Station before launching a coordinated attempt to enter the premises and free Jahangir Khan.
A district police officer said the plan involved gathering supporters at a predetermined location and then moving towards the police station in an organised manner.
Jahangir Khan already in custody
Jahangir Khan, who contested the recently concluded Assembly elections from Falta as a Trinamool Congress candidate, is already under arrest in the case.
He was long regarded as an influential figure in the area, according to local accounts cited by investigators.
Government warns of action against accused
A day before Regina Bibi’s arrest, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the administration had been instructed to identify properties belonging to those involved in the attack and initiate steps to recover losses caused to public property.
Addressing reporters on Friday, the Chief Minister said cases had been registered under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections related to anti-state activities.
“We will not only ensure exemplary punishment for the attackers, but compensation for the damage will also be recovered by confiscating their properties,” he said.
The administration is examining the extent of damage caused during the incident and the legal process for recovering the losses from those found responsible.
