Kolkata witnessed a flurry of high-level activities on Friday as Enforcement Directorate (ED) director Rahul Navin arrived in the city and held a series of crucial review meetings with senior officials at the CGO Complex.

The discussions reportedly focused on several high-profile investigations currently being handled by the ED’s Kolkata zone, including the alleged sand smuggling, coal smuggling and SSC recruitment scam cases. According to sources, the ED Director reached Kolkata late on Thursday night and began closed-door meetings from Friday morning. Senior and top-ranking ED officers stationed in the city were present, and the progress, status and future course of action of what are being described as “heavyweight” cases were reviewed in detail.

Officials said Mr Navin sought comprehensive updates on the current position of investigations in the sand and coal smuggling cases, both of which have had significant political ramifications in West Bengal. The SSC recruitment case, which continues to remain under close judicial and public scrutiny, also featured prominently in the discussions. Sources indicated that the Director examined the pace of investigation, evidentiary developments and legal hurdles in these cases. The status of a major Sahara-linked case currently under investigation by the Kolkata ED was also discussed during the meetings.

Officials briefed the Director on how far the probe has progressed and the challenges involved. In addition, the Director reportedly reviewed the judicial status of multiple cases, including whether charge sheets have been filed and how far the trial process has advanced. The visit assumes added significance in the backdrop of recent political controversy surrounding an ED raid conducted at the residence of Prateek Jain, head of political consultancy firm I-PAC, and at the firm’s office in connection with an old coal smuggling case registered in Delhi.

During the raid, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally visited the premises and accused the ED of attempting to disrupt the ruling Trinamul Congress’s election strategy.

Against this backdrop, Mr Navin’s sudden visit to Kolkata and his extensive review of sensitive and politically significant cases have been viewed by observers as highly meaningful, indicating close monitoring by the ED’s top leadership at a critical juncture.
