The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced byelections for the three Assembly seats of Kaliaganj in North Dinajpur, Karimpur in Nadia and Kharagpur Sadar in West Midnapore. The Kaliaganj seat fell vacant after the death of sitting Congress MLA Parmathanath Roy while Kharagpur Sadar’s BJP MLA Dilip Ghosh won the Midnapore Lok Sabha constituency.

On the other hand, Trinamul Congress’s Karimpur MLA Mahua Moitra emerged victorious in the Krishnnanagar Lok Sabha seat. According to Mr Sumit Mukherjee, principal secretary to ECI, the by-elections will be on 25 November, Monday. Along with the three seats of Bengal, on 25 November, byelections will be held also for one seat in Pithorgarh in Uttarakhand. The counting of votes will be on 28 November, Thursday.

The filing of nominations will start on 30 October (Wednesday), the last day for nominations is 6 November (Wednesday), scrutiny of nominations will be on 7 November and the last day for withdrawal of candidature is 11 November, Monday. With the announcement of the by-elections, Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect in the pollbound districts. Meanwhile, the Congress and the CPI-M have sealed a seat adjustment for the upcoming bypolls to stop the march of the BJP and the Trinamul Congress in the state.

The state leadership of the two parties decided in a meeting in August that while the Congress will contest North Dinajpur district’s Kaliaganj seat and West Midnapore district’s Kharagpur seat, the CPIM-led Left Front will fight Nadia district’s Karimpur seat.
