Siliguri, 5 December
The CPI-M and Congress staged demonstrations separately today in Siliguri, demanding a CBI probe and arrest of the Siliguri MLA and former Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA) chairman, Dr Rudranath Bhattacharya. While the Congress activists staged law-violation at Siliguri Court premises, the Paschimbanga Ganatantrik Mahila Samity (PGMS), the woman wing of the CPI-M, staged an agitation at the SJDA office near Siliguri Junction.
The West Bengal Pradesh Congress general secretary, Mr Kanak Debnath and the Darjeeling district Congress (Plains), Mr Sankar Malakar were among those present during the stir.
“We are demanding the CBI should investigate thoroughly to unearth the scam. At the same time, we take strong exceptions to the unceremonious manner in which Mr K Jayaraman was shunted from the post of Siliguri Metropolitan Police commissioner. However, my party would fully cooperate as regards the investigation,” Mr Debnath said.
On the other hand, the PGMS Darjeeling district president, Ms Radha Chhetri, said: “Apart from demanding a CBI probe, we want the former SJDA chairman and MLA, Dr Bhattacharya be arrested. The stir would continue and gain more pace in the coming days till our demands are met.” Around 100 women activists of the former ruling party thronged around the SJDA office near Siliguri Junction with placards and festoons, sloganeering for the probe and the arrest.
