KOLKATA, 31 MAY: Dropping the IT Act charges against Rajib Kumar Das, arrested for making abusive calls to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence, the city police has instead slapped “false” theft charges on Rajib, a police officer said.
Rajib was arrested from Asansol and booked under the IT Act. Yesterday he was produced at Alipore court which ordered the city police to register a case against him under cyber crime police station at Lalbazar.
In its 30 May edition The Statesman had carried a report of Rajib’s arrest under IT Act for abusing the CM. But the charges were dropped and he was booked for stealing a Samsung mobile phone and a Sony handycam. A senior officer of the city police said that instead of pursuing the case under the IT Act, the Kalighat police slapped petty theft charges against him (case no. 158 dated 27.5.2013). Today he was produced before a city court, which remanded him in police custody till 7 June.
“The incident tells on the workings of the city police that after having burnt its fingers in the cartoon case and unnecessarily harassed Ambikesh Mahapatra, it slapped just a petty theft case against Rajib," the officer said. sns
