The West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) came knocking at Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary Abhishek Banerjee‘s gate on Friday, this time for a separate case.

A team from the state police detective unit reached Abhishek’s Kalighat residence in the evening, to serve him a notice from the Salt Lake Cybercrime police station in a case pertaining to hate speech.

Police sources say that Abishek had used provocative language in one of his campaigns during the election season. A case was filed against him at the Baguihati police station. The CID later took on the investigation.

Since Abhishek was not at his residence during this incident, the employees at his office met them to enquire whether anyone else can take the official document. Reports indicate that Abhishek was at his aunt and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee’s residence at that time.

The presence of CID officials at Abhishek’s residence flared up tensions at the area. Lawyers from the TMC national general secretary arrived at the spot.

“CID has not given us any intimation. We have no information. We will tell you more once we have some information and follow the rules. We don’t know why they are here,” Advocate Debashish Rai said speaking to ANI.

Meanwhile, in the signature forgery case, the CID has summoned Abhishek on June 14 (Sunday), after he was questioned by the state investigating body for five and a half hours on Thursday evening at the agency’s headquarters at Bhabani Bhawan.

Abhishek had finally arrived at the CID office on Thursday after skipping three summons by the CID, at the direction of the Calcutta High Court which had directed him to cooperate with the investigation.

He was questioned in the case involving allegations that the signatures of multiple newly elected TMC MLAs were forged on an official party letter submitted to the Assembly nominating Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition.
