The Chandannagar corporation in the beginning of 2023 had taken up the proposal to set up a biogas plant since they found that the amount of biodegradable waste collected from 33 municipal wards were enough to run a biogas plant.

Hence, under the banner of Nirmal Bangla scheme, the biogas project was sent for consideration to the state government’s concerned department. Mayor of Chandannagar corporation Ram Chakraborty said, “We have received the green signal from the state government to go ahead with the biogas project.

Land area for the project has been finalized, tenders have been issued and soon the project will be on its way. The project will receive bio degradable waste from Chandannagar corporation area, Chinsurah municipality and from panchayat areas. Private biogas plants have also approached to become a part of the entire project.

The setting up of the biogas plant will save a big amount of the Chandannagar corporation which was used to control and manage the waste in different areas posing health hazards to the residents.” The mayor also said that the participation of private biogas plants will also generate revenue for the Chandannagar corporation.

For the generation of the biogas an anaerobic digester is fabricated to convert biodegradable kitchen waste into biogas. Setting up of the can prove to be revenue generating sources for most of the municipalities and gram panchayats in the district. The generated biogas can be used for household as well as commercial purpose.
