In a significant breakthrough overcoming the shackles of the long-delayed infrastructural projects in the state, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a mega investment of more than Rs 1 lakh crore in the railway sector soon after a high-level meeting with Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday.

Highlighting the ease of having a double-engine Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for the first time in the state at the centre and state level, Adhikari said that all intitiatives will get a fresh boost under the newly formed government.

The Chief Minister claimed that several central government projects were stalled for more than a decade under the previous Trinamool Congress regime, which has put the overall development in West Bengal at a backfoot and deprived the common citizens.

In the meeting, Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Agarwal informed that the Chingrihata flyover will be completed within deadline. Moreover, the state government has alloted 20 acres land for afforestation purposes as compensation for constructing the long-stalled Sivok-Rangpo Railway Line.

In addition to this, No Objection Certificates have been issued for constructing more than 70 Raiway overbridges and underpasses.

CM Adhikari said that the present government has now got the opportunity to develop its railway infrastructure. He announced that it has been planned to renovate 102 Amrit Bharat Railway stations, along with 538 flyovers and underpasses in the state. The central government is willing to allocate enough financial resources for these projects, he said.

Underlining Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to transform railways, the Chief Minister said that the Centre has made significant increase in budgetary allocation for the state, amounting to Rs 18,205 crore in FY 2026-27.

Highlighting the need to expand railway connectivity to the far reaches of the state, CM Adhikari said that Murshidabad, Nadia, Jhargram, Dakshin Dinajpur, Sundarban, and several other places are not still not linked. With the launch of the new projects, these connectivity issues are expected to be solved.

Speaking about the cooperation received by the state government, Vaishnaw said that after a long phase of inactivity, developmental projects are now being fastracked.

The Railway Minister said that the intention of the government to carry out new infrastructural projects in West Bengal is clear from the Budget itself. Vaishnaw said that 10 Amrit Bharat stations, nine Vande Bharat and multiple Amrit Bharat trains are now functional in the state. He also announced that 60 new-generation Metro trains will be launched in the next five years.

In addition to this, Vaishnaw also mentioned the Delhi-Lucknow-Patna-Siliguri bullet train corridor as well as the East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor starting from Dankuni. According to him, these projects are expected to give a fresh boost to West Bengal’s economic and infrastructural growth.

After the meeting, the state government promised full cooperation to the Centre to materialise these projects in terms of land acquisition, providing all necessary government permissions and the required security apparatus. The government has also requested the Centre to facilitate industry and employment opportunities related to railway infrastructure, as well as the development of urban transport facilites in Kolkata and Howrah.
