Balurghat, 16 July: Calcutta High Court has granted the plea of anticipatory bail of the former small scale industries minister Narayan Biswas and senior party leader Manabesh Choudhury.
They had sought anticipatory bail in connection with the case of a controversial cooperative society election at Damdama in the Gangarampur police station area on 23 September 2012.
The leaders had moved Calcutta HIgh Court after their anticipatory bail plea was rejected.
Police filed the case against the two leaders from the Opposition party, charging them with abetting violence during the election. The two leaders remained absconding, since 21 June ~ the day three other party leaders were arrested with relation to the same case.
Earlier, Gangarampur police also arrested three CPI-M leaders of the same block ~ former Gangarampur municipality chairman Balaram Ghosh, acting Gangarampur municipality chairman Subal Basak and local CPI-M leader Achinta Chakraborty ~ on 21 June.
Mrs Ghosh said that the whole thing was a part of a Trinamul Congress-hatched conspiracy to malign the party and its leaders. “Police filed a politically-fabricated case at the Trinamul Congress’ behest. We will organise a public rally soon in presence of the state level party leaders at Gangarampur,” she said.
The district president of South Dinajpur Trinamul Congress, Mr Biplab Mitra, has rubbished the allegation that the Trinamul Congress had anything to do with the case. sns
