A chilling incident unfolded early Monday morning when a bullet-riddled body of a 37-year-old man was recovered from a locked flat in the Narendrapur area of South 24-Parganas, raising suspicions of murder linked to a strained personal relationship.
The deceased, identified as Arup Mondal, was residing alone in a flat at Nabagram under the jurisdiction of Narendrapur police station. According to police sources, two firearms and six rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene, intensifying the mystery surrounding the death. Police have already arrested Mondal’s girlfriend, Priyanka Das, along with another youth identified as Raju, following preliminary interrogation. Investigators are probing whether the incident was a case of murder or suicide, with a possible relationship dispute emerging as a key angle.
Local residents said that Priyanka was a frequent visitor to Mondal’s flat. Family members of the deceased claimed that they were alerted on Sunday night by an acquaintance, who informed them about a disturbance inside the flat. Upon rushing to the residence, they found Mondal lying in a pool of blood. Mondal’s maternal uncle alleged that there was a gunshot wound on the right side of his forehead. “Arup was left-handed. Seeing the injury on the right side raised our suspicions,” he said, hinting at the possibility of foul play. The family has also expressed suspicion about the involvement of Raju, described as a friend of the deceased.
Police officials stated that the flat was found locked from inside, adding another layer of complexity to the case. Forensic experts have been called in to examine the scene and collect evidence. “The exact sequence of events is yet to be established. We are investigating all possible angles, including murder and abetment to suicide,” a senior police officer said.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, which is expected to provide crucial clues regarding the nature of the gunshot injury and the time of death.
