Actor-turned-politician Rudranil Ghosh on Monday mounted a sharp offensive against the ruling Trinamul Congress, presenting what he described as a “people’s charge sheet” against the Mamata Banerjee government at the BJP’s party office in Krishnagar under the Nadia North organisational district.
Speaking before party workers and supporters from the Nabadwip organisational cluster ~ comprising Krishnagar North and South, Murshidabad and Berhampore ~ Ghosh levelled a string of allegations touching upon border security, infrastructure, electoral processes, corruption and law and order. The programme was positioned as part of the BJP’s wider political mobilisation in the region.
Opening with what he termed a matter of national importance, Rudranil alleged that the state government had repeatedly obstructed efforts to instal barbed-wire fencing along stretches of the Indo-Bangladesh border in Karimpur. He claimed that such resistance was politically motivated and aimed at safeguarding the ruling party’s electoral interests. In the same breath, he alleged that the proposed Krishnagar-Karimpur railway line was stalled to prevent the Union government from gaining political credit for development projects in the area.
He further accused the Trinamul Congress of subverting democratic processes in Cooper’s Camp municipality, alleging that civic polls were effectively sidelined and administrators installed to retain control. According to him, the ruling party was apprehensive of facing the electorate.
Referring to communal disturbances in Murshidabad, Rudranil spoke of what he described as the “distressing condition of Hindus” in the district and alleged administrative inaction. He also invoked the School Service Commission recruitment scam, citing the arrest of Palashipara MLA Manik Bhattacharya as emblematic of what he called entrenched corruption under the present regime.
Alleging large-scale irregularities in voter enrolment, he claimed that the number of newly added voters in certain areas was “multiple times higher” than the birth rate, suggesting that illegal immigrants were being included in electoral rolls with the tacit support of local authorities. He demanded transparency and stricter scrutiny of the voter list.
Expressing resentment over an alleged police lathi-charge during Jagaddhatri Puja celebrations in Krishnagar, he accused the administration of acting high-handedly against devotees. He also levelled allegations against Chapra MLA Rukbanur Rahman, claiming that money had been collected from job aspirants on the promise of employment, and alleged that no action had been initiated by the ruling party despite complaints.
Concluding his address, Rudranil paid tribute to veteran BJP leader Mukul Roy, stating that had he remained in good health, the Krishnagar Assembly constituency would have witnessed greater development initiatives.
The Trinamul Congress has in the past rejected similar allegations as politically motivated. No immediate reaction from the ruling party was available at the time of filing the report.
