Saradha: Bumba&’s aide arrested
BARUIPUR, 16 JUNE: Police arrested, Satyajit Basu, another accused in the Saradha scam. Basu, an aide of Bumba, was absconding. He was produced at court, which remanded him in police custody for six days. Basu was the chief assistant of Arindam Das alias Bumba, the divisional manager of the company. The investors had lodged complaints of cheating against Basu. Police got the clue of his hideout from Bumba. He was nabbed from one of his friend’s house at Harinavi in the Sonarpur police station area.
Odisha-based businessman shot dead
TAMLUK, 16 JUNE: A 49-year-old Odisha-based businessman was shot dead by some unidentified goons at Digha Mohona in East Midnapore in the wee hours today. The deceased, identified as Hemanta Kumar Mahapatra, a resident of Balasore in Odisha died on the spot as the gang fired at him at least four rounds. Cops said the identities of the goons have not been ascertained yet, but they have detained the victim&’s brother Susanta and a person who looked after the victim&’s business in Digha for interrogation.
Youth arrested for molestation
KOLKATA, 16 JUNE: A youth was arrested in South Banksara near Satragachi in Howrah on charges of molesting a 11-year-old school girl on 13 June. Police said Tapas Pal, a local youth offered the girl a lift in his bicycle and later molested her. The youth allegedly threatened her not to tell the incident to her parents. Today the girl disclosed the incident to her mother and the family members lodged a compliant at Satragachi police station. Police arrested the youth.
Woman held for fake land sale
KOLKATA, 16 JUNE: Police arrested a woman (54) from Bansdroni in Purba Jadavpur on charges of duping a man to the tune of Rs 5.2 lakh by selling him a piece of land with forged documents. Police said Mita Chatterjee (54) sold a land property at Sonarpur to Tapan Das in August last year. Later, Mr Das found that the land belongs to another person and she had used forged documents to sell the land. Mr Das lodged a complaint with the police. Police started an investigation and arrested Mita.
Man found in unconscious state
KOLKATA, 16 JUNE: Police found Bijay Garai (35), a resident of West Port Police Station area, lying unconscious at Regent Colony. He was taken to SSKM hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. Police have sent the body for a postmortem. A probe is on.
KOLKATA, 16 JUNE: A 28-year-old women today committed suicide in Jorabagan by hanging herself. Police said Dolly Singh, who was depressed after her divorce, was alone in her room when she committed suicide. The body has been sent for postmortem.
WBSU severs ties with training institute
KOLKATA, 16 JUNE: West Bengal State University has decided to sever its ties with Kolkata Teachers’ Training Institute as the institute did not participate in the central counselling of BEd courses. The university has notified that it will not be responsible for any activity of the institute. If any candidate takes admission to this college for this session, the university would not register them. "We have written to the college a number of times asking it to participate in the counselling programme, but it didn’t. Then it was decided that we won’t take the responsibility of its students," said Prof Kaushik Gupta, V-C of the university. The university has 13 BEd colleges affiliated to it.
