KOLKATA, 19 JULY: The state home department is soon going to send a detailed estimate of the expenditure for setting up of four new police stations in Barasat to the finance department for approval.
A meeting has been held today at Writers’ Buildings at the chamber of the chief secretary regarding this matter. Director general of police, home secretary, officials of the home political department attended the meeting. A senior official said that chief minister Mamata Banerjee asked the home department to take up steps for setting up new four police stations in Barasat for preventing crimes. Several crimes took place in Barasat including the murder of Rajib Das for protesting against the eve teasing and recent gang rape and murder of a college girl.
It has been learnt that 150 to 200 new posts will be created for those police stations. The new police stations will be set up at Barasat, Sasan, Madhyamgram and Duttapukur. Police personnel could be transferred also from Barrackpore and Bidhannagar commissionerate for those new police stations. Presently two police outposts are located in Sasan and Madhyamgram and a police station exists in Barasat. "If necessary new police stations will be set up in the rented buildings. Total estimates will be calculated soon and sent to the finance department,” said a senior official. The jurisdiction for existing Barasat police station is above 286 square kilometer and 16 lakhs people are living in this police station area.
A senior police official from the Barasat police station said that the reason for the spurt in crime is the lack of manpower and unavailability of the infrastructure. sns
