PCC president Adhir Chowdhury lambasted Trinamul Congress (TMC) and its leaders including the party supremo Miss Mamata Banerjee while addressing his party supporters ahead of the Asansol Municipal elections here today.

He blamed Miss Mamata Banerjee for allowing convicted persons like Sohrab Ali to file nomination on her party&’s behalf. He said: “Miss Banerjee talks high about honesty. But what we can see is that she is fielding the convicted iron scrap mafia to confront the honest persons. We all know that mafia activities are very common in and around this industrial zone. The parties maintain their taste and dignity and prefer not to field such personalities as election candidates.”

It was barely a fortnight back when a number of block leaders from the Trinamul Congress hailing from Jamuria, Kulti, Raniganj had staged a demonstration in front of the houses of the party&’s district leaders in Asansol alleging that the party was trying to field the coal mafia and iron scrap dealers as civic poll candidates.

The BJP is also getting flak as it has fielded one Bhim Mondal as a party candidate. Bhim is also a noted coal mafia and a number of cases are still pending against him.

Sohrab Ali, TMC MLA from Raniganj was convicted in a case of pilfering Railway property two weeks ago by an Asansol court. Despite resistance by a section of TMC leaders,Sohrab was allowed to file nomination as a party candidate for ward 82. Besides, his wife Nargis Banu filed nomination as an Independent candidate for the same ward.

Mr Chowdhury made a sharp remark at state labour minister Mr Moloy Ghatak saying: “This election is an acid test for Moloy Ghatak. In the last general election, Moloy had managed to defeat Dola Sen. This was taken as a matter of cognizance by his party. This time he is being warned by his party Rs either secure the civic body or get lost from Asansol.”

He further added: “If Moloy fails, his sources of unauthorised earnings will also be lost forever.”

Mr Ghatak, the state minister and local MLA here has taken a serious note of Mr Chowdhury&’s allegations and said: “I shall file a defamation suit against such irresponsible remarks.”
