BEHRAMPORE, 9 JUNE: Poll violence may escalate during the rural polls because circumstances currently prevailing in the state are not conducive to elections, Congress leader and Behrampore MP, Mr. Adhir Chowdhury said here this afternoon.
The law and order situation is in such a bad shape that creating a congenial atmosphere for holding elections appears to be a challenging task for the election commission, said Mr Chowdhury who is also the minister of state for railways and president of Murshidabad district Congress.
Declaring the names of party candidates for the Zilla Parishad today at the party office at Behrampore, Mr Chowdhury apprehended that incidents of violence like intimidation, bloodshed and murders will go up during the rural polls, especially in Murshidabad. The weather condition also does not favour panchayat election because poll campaigns in remote and rural areas will be hit hard by monsoon, he added. The minister hit out at the ruling Trinamul Congress and the CPI-M, alleging that Congress activists were at the receiving end of excesses by supporters of these two parties. TMC and CPI-M have joined hands with police to terrorize Congress voters and workers in Murshidabad, he alleged.
Mr Chowdhury said police personnel in Murshidabad are already out in the field to recruit candidates for Trinamul Congress in areas where TMC has no strength to contest election. Many of the people involved in cattle smuggling are being assured that police would facilitate smuggling for those who would agree to contest election as Trinamul candidates, stated Mr. Chowdhury.
As Trinamul is not in a position to threaten Congress workers, it has engaged police to do the same against Congress candidates, he remarked. His allegation against police was supported by Congress MLA, Md. Akhruzzaman. Citing an example of police atrocity on Congress supporters, Mr. Chowdhury said a pregnant woman, Mrs. Rangila Bibi from Kakmari char on the Padma river was physically assaulted to the extent that she was admitted in critical condition to Sadikhardiar hospital.
