Trinamool Congress leader Kailash Mishra who has been a close aide of TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was arrested by the West Bengal police in Bihar’s Madhubani, officials said on Sunday.

Mishra had contested the Assembly elections from the Bally Assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Howrah district but lost to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Sanjay Kumar Singh by a margin of 11,997 votes.

Officials said that several criminal cases were registered against him at various police stations in West Bengal during the 2021 Assembly elections. Mishra was wanted for his involvement in alleged multi-crore financial fraud and economic irregularity cases.

According to police sources, Mishra was arrested on Saturday evening from the Rahika-Benipatti Main Road between Madhubani’s Arer and Rahika areas in a planned operation. Reports indicate that the police carried out the operation in secrecy to ensure that the operation was carried out without any untoward incident. Reports suggest that the investigators had been monitoring Mishra’s movements for an extended period before the arrest.
