Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are being investigated by the ED and the CBI after it was detected that they allegedly cheated Punjab National Bank of more than Rs 13,400 crore.
Choksi, in a bid to avoid extradition to India, had earlier this year, surrendered his passport to the Indian High Commission in Antigua.
Choksi, currently based in the Caribbean nation of Antigua, filed an affidavit stating he had left the country in January 2018 for getting medical check-up and treatment abroad.
“We remain committed to bringing economic offenders back to India,” the spokesperson added.
Mehul Choksi had earlier in July claimed that he had taken the citizenship of the Caribbean island nation.

A team from India was sent to Antigua a few days ago to pursue the authorities there to extradite Choksi, an accused in the alleged PNB fraud case.
Choksi and his companies allegedly availed credit from overseas branches of Indian banks using the fraudulent guarantees of PNB.
Antigua is among the many tax havens in the Caribbean and has no extradition treaty with India, which makes it harder to chase the fugitive diamond merchant.

Last week, it came to light that Mehul Choksi had acquired citizenship of Antigua even before the USD 2 billion Punjab National Bank fraud was unearthed.
Choksi, wanted in the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank fraud case along with nephew Nirav Modi, had taken Antiguan citizenship last year.
Mehul Choksi, the fugitive uncle of the Rs 13,500-crore PNB fraud main accused Nirav Modi, said that the reason why he took the citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda is because he intends to “expand his business”.
