India will be facing arch-rival Pakistan at the Old Trafford stadium, Manchester, on Sunday, 16 June. This will be the 7th time the two teams will be facing each other in the quadrennial event since their participation in the inaugural edition of the mega event.

The rivalry between India and Pakistan is a matter of history and hence the matches between them have always been important – especially, their World Cup encounters.

Though India has an upper hand over Pakistan in the quadrennial event winning all the six matches played between them so far, Pakistan – the unpredictables – are a tough team to beat.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane of the World Cup matches played between the two teams so far.

Benson & Hedges World Cup 1992 – India won by 43 runs. Sachin Tendulkar was named as the Player of the Match for his 54 not out and a wicket of Pakistan opener batsman Aamer Sohail.

This was when India faced Pakistan for the first time on the cricket world’s biggest stage. Ajay Jadeja (46) and Sachin Tendulkar (54*) helped India post a total of 216/7. In response, the Pakistani team were bundled out for 173.

Wills World Cup 1996 – India won by 39 runs. Navjot Singh Sidhu was named Player of the Match for his innings of 93 runs, laced with 11 boundaries.

Batting first, India posted a total of 287/8 and Pakistan fell 39 runs short.

ICC Cricket World Cup 1999 – India won by 47 runs. Venkatesh Prasad was named Player of the Match for his figures of 5/27.

India posted a total of 227/6 and the Pakistani ship submerged for 180. This match was played in Manchester.

2003 ICC Cricket World Cup – India won by 6 wickets. Sachin Tendulkar was named Player of the Match for his dominating innings of 98 runs in just 75 deliveries.

Batting first, Pakistan posted a total of 273/7. However, a strong Indian batting lineup chased down the target with 26 balls to spare.

2011 ICC Cricket World Cup – India won by 29 runs. Sachin Tendulkar was named Player of the Match for his 85-run innings.

Batting first, India posted a total of 260 runs and Pakistan were bundled out for 231.

2015 ICC Cricket World Cup – India won by 76 runs. Virat Kohli was named Player of the Match for his 107-run innings.

Batting first, India touched the 300-run mark setting a target of 301 for Pakistan, courtesy a Virat Kohli-ton. While defending the target, Men in Blue were quite clinical with their bowling and bundled the Men in Green for 224.
