HINDU GIRL KIDNAPPED

Mr. B.D. Hazra, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Howrah, disposed of a case in which two Mahomedan couples, Golam Hossein and Nasiban Bibi and Babar Ali and Jumman Bibi, were charged with having kidnapped a Chetri girl of nine years named Ramkalia from the lawful custody of her mother, residing at Lillooah.

The prosecution case was that the two female accused decoyed the girl away by giving her sweets and took her to a house in Sikderbagan Street. There she was made over to the two male accused who were taking her to Kamarhati by rail when they were arrested on suspicion by the Railway police.

The Magistrate acquitted Babar and Jumman Bibi for want of evidence, and sentenced Golam Hossein and Nasiban Bibi to two years’ rigorous imprisonment each.

DISPUTE OVER A DRESS

Before Mr. N.C. Sen, officiating Fifth Judge, Calcutta Small Cause Court, a case which came to a happy termination in a suitable donation to St. Dunstan’s Home for Blind Soldiers and Sailors came on.

Mrs. Stevens, through her vakil, Mr. S.A. Gomes, sought to recover charges for making a dress and extra materials supplied to the defendant, Mrs. Harris, a nurse.

Mr. F.R. Surita, pleader, for the defendant, contested the suit on the ground that the dress had not been made properly, materials did not match and his client had to spend extra money to make the garment wearable.

Mr. Gomes, for the plaintiff, denied these charges and proceeded to examine his client to show that there was no fault on her part. Before the examination had concluded, it was suggested on behalf of the defendant that if the plaintiff did not object to the disputed amount being made over to St. Dunstan’s Home, and that the admitted amount only be accepted by her, the matter could be ended. This suggestion was duly considered by the plaintiff, who also offered to give her share to the same fund. The suit thereupon was compromised.

FATAL MOTOR SMASH AT KARACHI

A fatal motor car accident occurred on Saturday about midnight on the road from Karachi to Clifton. Two cars proceeding side by side suddenly saw a lightless ghari approaching. One car swerved into the side of the road and managed to pull up, the passengers sustaining minor injuries.

The chauffeur of the other car jammed on the brakes when suddenly the back wheel broke and the car over-turned, pinning a Parsi who was riding on the splashboard to the ground and killing him instantly.

Of the other occupants of the two cars the chief officer of a ship in harbour sustained a fractured collar bone and the chief engineer of another ship severe head injuries. One car was utterly wrecked.
