Municipality to become municipal corporation

Bhubaneswar, 1 October
Apparently buoyed by the perceived response to its declaration of upgrading Sambalpur municipality as a municipal corporation (MC), the state government today announced the Rourkela municipality too would be upgraded to a municpal corporation.
Chief minister Mr Naveen Patnaik, while discussing with a delegation from the Steel City, informed that the state government is taking steps in the direction.
“We will shortly come out with a Gazette Notification about upgrading Rourkela municipality as a Municipal Corporation,” he said.
Rourkela will be the fifth MC of the state after Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur and Sambalpur.
Housing and urban development minister Mr Debi Prasad Mishra, Rourkela MLA Mr Sarada Nayak, chief secretary Mr Jugal Kishore Mohapatra, among others, were present during the meeting.
Meanwhile, the decision of the state government raised many an eyebrow as no such major demand was made from the Steel City. The announcement which was made barely days after upgrading Sambalpur as a MC was seen as political decisions to quell the anguish over High Court bench issue.
The fact that Rourkela too has emerged as a major contender for the proposed HC bench in Western Odisha and is considered to be politically sensitive might have influenced the decision on MC announcement, said an concerned citizen, wondering if similar “pre-ULB poll gifts” will be doled out to other major urban areas of Western Odisha.
