Referred as a confidante of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, U Htin Kyaw was a man not known to the world until last week when he was nominated as one of the three final candidates to be Myanmar’s next President. Now, the National League for Democracy (NLD) leader becomes the first civilian to be elected the President of Myanmar after over 50 years of military rule.

Here are a few interesting facts about Htin Kyaw:

  • The political leader was born in Kungyangon, Hanthawaddy Division, Myanmar (British Burman). His father is late writer, poet and scholar Min Thu Wun and his mother is Kyi Kyi
  • He studied computer science at the University of London. He also has a degree in Economics
  • Politics is not the only domain that Htin Kyaw has explored. He worked as a university professor, was a part of the Burmese Government and held important posts in the ministries of industry and foreign affairs before resigning as deputy director in the Foreign Economic Relations Department in 1992
  • It is widely known that he is very close to Suu Kyi. However, not many know that Htin Kyaw works as a director in the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation,  the charitable organisation founded by Aung San Suu Kyi and named after her mother Khin Kyi
  • He is married to Myanmar lower house MP Daw Su Su Lwin.  His father-in-law U Lwin was the co-founder of NLD
  • Reports suggest that he wrote his father Min Thu Wun’s biography titled Aba bawa aba akyaung tasae tasaung
  • Where did he meet Suu Kyi? Well, if reports are to be believed then the two NLD leaders attended the same school. While some articles mention the school’s name as Yangon&’s Methodist English High School, others mention it as Dagon township&’s Basic Education High School Number 1
