Citizens of Cuttack took to the street to protest the breakdown of law and order after two separate murders and a bomb attack rocked the town today. One of the victims was Kesab Behera, secretary of Seikh Bazar puja committee.
Commissioner of Police Sunil Ray and top officers rushed to pacify the local people. While Kesab was shot dead, Maheswar Jena was stabbed to death at Kalyani Nagar area of the city today. The third incident took place in Balu Bazar area where three bombs were hurled at a house, but no one was injured.According to residents of Seikh Bazar, unidentified assailants fired at Kesab as he was coming out of his house this morning. He sustained several bullet injuries and was rushed to the SCB Medical College Hospital from where he was shifted to a private hospital where he died. The murder of the secretary of a puja committee is bound to have serious repercussions and Seikh Bazar is known to be a trouble spot of the city.
Local Congress leaders condemned the murder and said it was a reflection of the deteriorating law and order situation in the town.
The police, however, manage to salvage some ground by arresting the accused of the Kalyani Nagar murder case within hours of the incident.
The assailant Sisir Sahu has been arrested, informed police sources adding the two had business rivalry and had even attacked each other earlier.
In the third incident, according to eyewitnesses, at least 20 bike-borne miscreants entered the Rovers Street near Balu Bazar and damaged a road side tea stall and hurled bombs at a house before they fled.
