Disillusioned with the Maoist outfits they were working for, as many as 12 cadres, including five women, have surrendered before police, claimed Malkangiri SP Mr Akhileswar Singh.
A couple ~ Mr Muka Madkami and Ms Gauri Mattam alias Sabita ~ is among those who laid down arms and evinced interest to return to the mainstream of society.
According to police sources, the Maoists belonged to different villages under Kalimela and Chitrakonda police station limits, and working under Poplur Dalam, Kalimela Dalam and Cut-off area Dalam.
The couple~ Muka and Gauri~ was assistant commandant in the Poplur Dalam for last five years.
The four other women Maoists were Ms Irne Madhi of Kosulkunda village and Ms Subarna Khara alias Jayanti, Ms Purnima Khara alias Nirmala and Ms Mukti Khila of Kuntipadar village.
The other Maoists are Mr Uddhab Kantari, Mr Buddu Khara, Mr Kosa Madkami, Mr Buddu Hantal, Mr Samara Bogdait and Mukka Madkami.
They were involved in murder, encounters with police, setting off landmines, loot, extortion, and burning of vehicles of government and private companies and a panchayat office in the last five to seven years, police said.
Mr Singh claimed that a couple factors led to the change of heart of the cadres, leading to their surrender.
Quoting the cadres, Mr Singh claimed that the women, who were forcibly picked up from their native places, were sexually exploited by the Maoist leaders.
This apart, lack of support and assistance to arrested cadres, and usurping the funds by the leaders collected in the outfits’ names as well as growing pressure in the wake of heavy force deployment also made them lay down their arms and surrender, the SP added.
