The postal department has started a probe against the sub-postmaster of Kujanga, Mr Sangram Sekhar Behera, for alleged withdrawal of more than Rs 20 lakh from fixed accounts of several depositors.
While withdrawal of cash from four accounts has come to the fore so far, the department suspects that the quantum of embezzlement by Mr Behera may be more.
The documents and ledger books are being verified, said department officials. With Mr Behera absconding, authorities broke upon the iron chest and cupboard in the sub-post office to seize documents that can throw light on the magnitude of the embezzlement.
“The extent and magnitude of the embezzlement is yet to be ascertained. The records are being checked and appropriate action will be taken once it is complete,” said postal superintendent Mr Manmohan Mohapatra.
According to reports, the alleged misappropriation came to light recently when documents at the sub-post office were being verified as part of a regular exercise.
The exercise revealed that Mr Behera withdrew over Rs 20 lakh from the fixed deposit accounts of four senior citizens by forging their signature.
The postal inspector, Kujanga, Mr Divya Singh Tripathy, who is investigating the case, said a detailed report has been submitted to the office of the Chief Post Master General (CPMG), Bhubaneswar.
