In a preemptive attack, Rajgangpur police claimed to have destroyed a camp of People&’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a criminal outfit which claims itself to be a Maoist organisation.
According to reports, the security forces were engaged with the criminal gang in a gun battle for over 30 minutes in Dumejharan forest area of Sundergarh district yesterday and later, seized some firearms and other items after the criminals fled.
“We have seized seven handmade rifles, one country made pistol, 74 live rounds, tarpaulin, medicine, mobiles, notebooks and some other materials. We are yet to arrest any criminals involved the group. The combing operation is still on and we expect to trace some fleeing criminals,” said SP, Sundergarh Mr Sanjeev Arora, hoping that the materials will give them some good lead on the gang&’s activities in the region.
The camp was located close to the inter-state borders and it is suspected that the gang was trying to regroup after some hiatus.
According to information, the security forces swopped down on the camp after getting tip-off about movement of 10-14 youths. The raiding team was led by IIC of Rajgangpur police station, Mr Arun Swain.
“The sentry of the camp opened fire at us and he was then joined by the other gang members. We fired at them in retaliation. The PLFI members preferred to flee finding that they were outnumbered and could not match our firepower,” said Mr Swain.
SP Mr Arora claimed that the busting of the camp was a major setback for PLFI.
“We will never give them any leeway as far Sundergarh region is concerned,” he said.
