Puri, 21 July: Eminent Odissi dancer and Padmashri awardee Ileana Citaristi today alleged she was manhandled and assaulted on the chariot of Lord Jagannath today when she refused to pay Rs 1000 to a servitor.
She has lodged a police complaint. A servitor is said to have demanded Rs 1000 from her and rejected the Rs 20 that she offered.
"He then shouted "foreigner, foreigner" and started hitting me on my head," complained the famous Odissi dancer.
Senior administrative officers, including Mr Arabinda Padhee, IAS, and head of the Temple Administration , expressed regret and said action will be taken.
The president of Daitapati Niyog, a body of servitors, Mr Ramakrushna also expressed his displeasure. “I apologize on behalf of the servitors, said Mr Ramakrushna. sns
