Jajpur, 6 January
A minor girl committed suicide after allegedly being molested by a village youth, apparently fearing social stigma, in Jajpur district on Sunday, police said.
The alleged incident took place at Uparagada village under Korei police station limits. The 15-year old victim was a meritorious student in the local government high school.
Sources said that her parents, both daily labourers, were absent when she hanged herself with her scarf at home.
According to reports, the girl had gone to the village nullah for a bath when the alleged molestation incident took place. “While she was returning home alone, Mr Rajan Bhoi of the same village waylaid her and molested her. When she screamed for help, many of us who were working in the nearby agricultural fields rushed to her help,” said Mr Kalandi Bhoi, a villager.
The angry villagers caught hold of the accused tied him to a tree and informed the local police.
Traumatised over the incident, the girl ran back home and committed suicide. Police later reached her house and found the body. “We have arrested the accused Mr Bhoi under section 254 and 306 of IPC and forwarded him to a local court. He was remanded to judicial custody after his bail applications were rejected,” said IIC of Korei police station, Mr Prasanta Kumar Majhi.
