Mayurbhanj police claimed to have arrested a Maoist couple on Saturday.
The couple ~ Mr Sushil Mohanta alias Sunil alias Sandip (26) and Nila Mohanta (22) ~ are accused of being involved in over a dozen Maoist operations, including the attack on the JMM president and former MP Mr Sudam Marandi. They operated in Odisha as well as West Bengal.
Sources said the duo belonged to Sautul village of West Midnapore district in West Bengal, and nabbed from the house of one Mr Thakura Soren at Dudhakundi village under Chandua police limits.
“Acting on a tip-off, we conducted raids on the house of Mr Soren where the couple had taken shelter for the last couple of days and arrested the duo,” said SP Mr Nikhil Kanodia, who had led the raiding party.
Mr Soren is the brother-in-law of Sushil. He is yet to be arrested.
Addressing media persons here, Mr Kanodia claimed that the couple was involved in at least six cases in Gopiballavpur area, three in Salabani area in West Bengal and more than four cases in Kuliana and Chandua areas in Mayurbhanj district.
He said that the duo was among the group of ultras who had launched the attack on the ex-MP Mr Marandi on 13 October 2009. While Mr Marandi escaped unhurt, three persons, including an ASI of police and two constables, were killed by the Rebels at Bandab village under Chandua police limits.
It is further alleged that the couple was behind the murder of saw mill owner Gourtam Mohanta in Kathasirisa area and son of a police informer in Handibhanga village in 2010
“They were produced in a local court and have been sent to judicial custody after their bail application was rejected,” said Mr Kanodia.
