At least eight highway robberies were reported on the 25 km stretch on National Highway between Pottangi and Sunki in Koraput district near Ralegada village in less than a week, police said.
On Thursday, a gang assaulted and robbed Laxmi Narayan Sethi of Malkangiri district of Rs 88,000. “They stopped our vehicle near Ralegada, took the driver to an unknown place and badly assaulted three of my colleagues before fleeing with the cash. The robbers were armed with iron rods and sharp-edged weapons,” Sethi, who was returning from Bhubaneswar, said.
The robbers looted another taxi and tried to attack few more vehicles, mostly four-wheelers, the same night. A few days back they attacked a four-wheeler and looted cash and valuables from the passengers, the police said. The widening of the ghat road touching Andhra Pradesh border has been left half-constructed since 2010. The road is filled with potholes and is badly damaged forcing drivers to slow down and helping robbers to attack, sources said. “On Wednesday night, when the robbers tried to attack my vehicle, I raised its speed and didn’t stop. They threw stones and broke the rear glass,” said taxi driver Manoj Kumar Padhi. “Night patrolling on NH has been intensified. Some security measures have been taken to ensure that vehicles safely cross the ghat section, said Koraput SP Awinash Kumar.
