More than 600 Red Cross volunteers and life members including Youth and Junior Red Cross volunteers and shelter volunteers participated in the International Volunteer Day organised by Indian Red Cross Society, Odisha State Branch (IRCS-OSB) here yesterday.
A series of activities including exhibition of disaster equipments by National Disaster Rapid Action Force (NDRAF), Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and Red Cross as well as a human chain formation, signature campaign and cultural programme marked the day.
While the global theme of the celebration was Young, Global and Active, the local focus was on volunteering for community-based disaster preparedness, informed Honorary Secretary of IRCS-OSB, Dr. Mangala Prasad Mohanty,
While health and family welfare minister Dr Damodar Rout, who is also the chairman of state working committee of IDCS-OSB chaired the occasion, revenue minister Mr Surjya Narayan Patro also attended the function. “On International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2013, we not only celebrate and recognize volunteerism in all its facets – but pay special tribute to the contribution of youth volunteers in global peace and sustainable human development. For IVD 2013 we celebrate globally that young people act as the agents of change in their communities,” said honorary secretary Dr Mohanty.
