Bhubaneswar, 7 July
In the wake of serial bomb blasts at Mahabodhi temple complex in Bodh Gaya in Bihar, the state government has put the police on high alert and beefed up security in the famous Buddhist sites in Odisha as well as Lord Jagannath Temple at Puri.
The Buddhist destinations where security has been heightened include the Peace Pagoda at Dhauli, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, and Lalitgiri, Ratnagiri and Udayagiri in Jajpur district.
A senior home department officer said that the Puri police administration has been directed to take all possible steps to preempt any terrorist attack. The fact that over a million devotees from across the country and even beyond are to attend the famous Rath Yatra at Puri after three days has added to the worries and anxieties of the cops.
“We have beefed up security in the temple and alerted our officials to look for suspicious elements,” said a senior police official, adding that the hotels and lodges will be thoroughly checked.
Meanwhile one platoon of force has been deployed at Dhauli, which is famous for its Buddhist monuments.
The district administration in Jajpur has also been kept on alert as it houses several prominent Buddhist sites and attracts a large number of domestic and foreign tourists.
“I have asked the SP to tighten security in and around the Buddhist sites,” said Jajpur collector Mr Anil Kumar Samal.
